Quartz rotators based on circular birefringence are very convenient high damage threshold devices. They are useful over a narrow band of wavelengths centered at the design wavelength. A 90° rotator centered at 500nm gives acceptable performance from 488-515nm in laser pumping schemes. These rotators have outstanding feature that their alignment is not a function of their rotation. They are simply placed in the beam at normal incidence.
